School Choir aims for chart topping successA girls’ school choir is hoping to top the classical music charts after recording a beautiful track on a fundraising album for this year’s National Eisteddfod.

Pupils from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls were thrilled to be invited by David Davies MP to record Mae Hiraeth yn y Môr, a Welsh song by Dilys Elwyn-Edwards meaning ‘there is a longing in the sea’.

HMSG’s Chamber Choir is joined by 11 other local choirs on the album, recorded at Nimbus studio in Wyastone.

Mario Conway, Director of Music at HMSG, said: “It was exciting to be involved as the song was recorded in a professional recording studio which normally records classical artistes of the highest calibre.

“We recorded the performance and were then able to listen to the playback in the recording booth.” For most of the girls in the choir it was the first time they had been involved in a professional recording session, which gave them an insight into how CDs are put together.

“It was quite an eye-opener for them,” Mr Conway added.

“As this year’s National Eisteddfod is being held in Abergavenny later this year, David Davies MP felt compelled to organise an event in the form of a CD which would feature choirs from the locality.

“We were delighted to be involved and the CD is ready for release.

“If it takes off as well as predictions indicate, it could find its way into the Classic FM Classical music chart.

“Maybe even Number 1 – who knows?

“Anything and everything is possible.”
