Natalya & Sophie qualify for Welsh Junior Welsh Open Final

April 30, 2014

Sophie finished as the first placed qualifier for the Principality Welsh Open over the demanding links of Langland Bay Golf Club.

A “sporting breeze’ and fast running greens proved to be a demanding test for all involved but accuracy off the tee was Sophie’s strength allowing her to hit many greens in regulation.  She now goes forward to tread the famous fairways of the Celtic Manor’s 2010 course.  Although this was a handicap qualifier Sophie was the youngest competitor at this qualifying venue.  Sophie has also represented her county at junior level and has played for the County Ladies 2nd team.

Year 9 pupil Natalya stunned golf enthusiasts during half term when she won the regional Junior Welsh Open.  Natalya who is just fourteen years old and has only been playing golf for a few years was one of seventeen girls competing in the U18 competition.

Natalya’s group was the penultimate to tee-off.  At the halfway point a torrential downpour made conditions more difficult and during the back nine a lost ball in a river allowed the final group to pass through.  After almost six hours on the course with everyone waiting in the clubhouse for the presentation, Natalya’s group finally made it to the 18th green.   The cards were handed in; Natalya had no idea how she had fared.  Fourth, third and second places were announced (these girls were all either sixteen or seventeen years of age) so everyone was stunned to find out that Natalya had won!

Natalya has now been selected to play in the Junior Welsh Open Final on the ‘Twenty Ten’ Course at the Celtic Manor Resort in August.  We wish her the best of luck.
