A healthy diet, plenty of sleep and lots of training have helped a schoolgirl win the chance to represent Wales U17 in the upcoming European Netball Championships.

Following a rigorous schedule of trials, Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls pupil, Evie, has secured her place in the final squad of 12.

The Year 11 pupil is set to play as one of the leading shooters in the championships this weekend in Hull.

She said: “I was invited to trial last September and was selected to be part of the 18-strong U17 long squad.

“We then had a training weekend once a month which sometimes included matches. As we got closer to Netball Europe the squad was reduced to 14, then last weekend following a gruelling training session, the coaches announced the short squad of 12 to go to Hull for Netball Europe.

“I love the teamwork involved in netball, the speed and quick decision-making needed on court, and winning matches.”
Evie enjoys playing netball at all levels, and hopes to win the South East Wales League with her Newport club – who are currently second.

She also hopes to continue playing for Wales.

“I have to be very organised to ensure I am on top of everything as I have my GCSEs in a few months,” she added.

“I make sure I have a healthy diet and plenty of sleep as I have to train or play matches up to five times a week.”
