HMSG are runners-up in National Netball Tournament

March 7, 2016

On Saturday 5th March, the 1st Netball team travelled to Brecon Leisure Centre for the President’s Cup finals.  The competition encompasses the top 8 schools or colleges in Wales, all of whom have qualified for the competition via their respective county championships.

Always a tough competition, with teams littered with Welsh Internationals, the 1st VII were looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead.  A fantastic start gave them a 22-6 win over Coleg Cambria, a 19-4 victory over Ysgol Llangefni and a 14-6 win against a tough team from Ysgol Dyffryn Amman.  Brynteg Comprehensive have always proved tough competition in the past, but some excellent play through the court to shooters Evie and Annabel ensured yet another win, 16-5.

Neath Port Talbot College was the next match, and they too had got through to this stage unbeaten.  A tight first half saw each centre pass converted, with very few turnovers.  In the second half, Neath upped their game and pulled ahead, where they remained.  An 8-13 loss meant HMSG now had to battle for the runners-up position.  An easy victory over Crickhowell High School 20-3, meant there was just one game to play.  Cardiff High School had only lost to Neath, so whichever team took victory in their final game would be runners-up.  A fantastic game by all the players and one hundred percent effort put HMSG on top with a 14-10 victory.

The team should be extremely proud of their achievement, and they were led superbly well by captain Megan.  Next week they travel to Malvern St James for their annual tournament, where they look to defend their title they won last year.  Congratulations Megan, Jenny, Evie, Poppy, Kala, Sereima, Issie, Ellie and Annabel.
