February 22, 2017

Geography Club members celebrated the recent Chinese New Year, exploring stories linked to the New Year celebrations and tasting some Chinese delicacies.

Pupils found out that people born in the Year of the Rooster are observant, hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented. The Rooster ranks tenth out of the 12 animals in the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle.

Chinese New Year 2017 was on Saturday 28th January, also known as Spring Festival in China, is an important celebration for families. Festivities go on for over a week. Pupils also found out that the red envelopes given out during this time are to keep children safe from a demon named Sui.

The Chinese snacks had a mix of reactions, the crispy seaweed and seaweed-flavoured crisps were popular, the green tea mochi were an acquired taste. Strangely, there were no takers for the spicy duck feet!
