Last Thursday, twenty-two Year 12 physicists attended a day of lectures at Cardiff University’s School of Physics and Astronomy. The theme of the day was, ‘From the nano-small to the cosmic big’ and the titles of the six lectures were:
‘Diamond: not all that glitters is gold’ by Dr Oliver Williams
‘The life and death of stars: clouds, cosmic cauldrons in space’ by Ms Ciara Quinn
‘Music to your ears’ by Mrs Becky Holmes from ‘Science made Simple
‘“Really $mall = Really £arge”: Where next for the biggest physics born business on Earth?’ by Dr Phil Buckle
‘Shedding light on the course with Gravitational Waves’ by Ms Laura Nuttall
‘Sounds from Space’ Dr Chris North.
The presenters all work at the University, either as lecturers or research students and the content of their talks was extremely up-to-date and inspirational to all in the audience. We were reminded that physics is the science of everything and is behind all the technology we take for granted and use every day. Dr Buckle said, “After all, without physics you wouldn’t have an iPhone, and don’t you forget it!”
