In bad conditions, Emma and Molly reached the final, with Emma winning her event. The J14 coxed quads also reached their final, but closely missed out on a medal. Another win was awarded to Year 10 HMSG girl Emily, as she won the J15 singles event. Charlie and Grace both competed in separate events, and both reached the final. The girls hardly had time to get their breath back, as they then jumped into a double to compete in another final, narrowly missing out on a medal.
Many HMSG girls were selected to represent the school at the prestigious National Schools Regatta at Nottingham. Friday the 27th saw some promising results from the younger girls, as the J14 coxed quad finished 13th out of 31 boats. The J14 double finished in an encouraging 4th place out of 17, missing out on a bronze medal by only 3 seconds. Our J15 sculler Charlie once again continued the stream of good results by achieving 5th place out of 18, only 10 seconds behind the winner, which was a fantastic effort. Four of our J15 girls also competed in the double sculls, finishing in 12th and 25th place.
Thomas and Charlie finished 6th out of 24 boats in the J16 doubles. Also finishing 6th were Jo and Holly in the Championship doubles. The Junior fours competed in the same event, with the J16 four reaching the final, and the J18 four narrowly missing out.
Sunday saw the senior girls racing in smaller boats, as Grace gained a respectable 9th place in her single out of 17 boats. The J16 four of Bethan, Ceri, Anna and Rachel competed once again, but following some technical difficulties, finished in 22nd place. Jo and Holly once again competed, yet this time in a pair, and finished in 10th place. Overall, the girls achieved some very promising results and hope to improve on their performance throughout the summer months in preparation for the events of the next academic year.
Over the same weekend as National Schools, Monmouth regatta took place. Some of our rowers in years 9 and 10 took part in the ‘Sprint’, which involves two boats side by side racing down a short course. Two girls were awarded wins, as Emily competed in her single in the J15 category, coming first. Carys also won her event, as she competed in the J14 singles.
