13+ Scholarships

Various scholarships are available at 13+ entry level for strong candidates, whether boarders or day pupils. Academic Scholarships are awarded on consideration of entrance examination results, interview and school report. All candidates sitting our papers are automatically considered for academic scholarships.

All applications for the following Scholarships should be made by letter to the Headmistress:

Music Scholarships

At 13+, pupils are expected to have reached Grade 6 standard or show evidence of outstanding potential.

At the audition, girls will be invited to play two contrasting pieces of music on their first instrument (or voice), with an optional piece on a second instrument (or voice).There will also be aural and sight-reading tests. In addition, candidates should be prepared to answer general questions regarding their music interest, e.g. composing, harmony, concerts, instruments, choirs and orchestras. Successful candidates will be expected to show some knowledge of theory.

All Music Scholarships are dependent upon weekly attendance at school musical activities, to be agreed, and participation in school concerts, etc. Candidates and their parents are respectfully advised that it is a condition of all music scholarships that scholars receive principal study of instrumental tuition from a member of HMSG music staff. Exceptions are made for post Grade 8 students who wish to study with an Associate Professor of one of the British Conservatoires or who attend the junior departments of Conservatoires.

Sport Scholarships

Students will be invited to spend a day with HMSG’s Department of Physical Education.The programme will allow applicants to see all the facilities and to be assessed across a range of the major sports offered at HMSG. Students offered a Sports Scholarship will be expected to exhibit the following:

  • Excellent aptitude for sport in general
  • Particular strength in one or more sports or dance
  • The commitment to attend lunchtime and after school practices and training sessions
  • The wish to represent the school to the highest level possible in at least one sport or dance
  • To be available to participate in fixtures on weekdays and weekends
  • To support their application, students should bring a portfolio of their sporting achievements, awards, successes, press coverage, etc.

Creative Arts Scholarships

These scholarships recognise that students may have an interest across the range of creative subjects, including aspects of art and drama, and so the format of the scholarship day may vary.

Drama
Students will be invited to join a drama lesson. In addition there will be a short group interview. Students will be expected to improvise spontaneously in response to a given stimulus and to prepare a dramatic monologue. Students awarded a scholarship should expect to study GCSE Drama or A level Drama and Theatre Studies and to involve themselves in school productions and other extra curricular activities.

Art
Students will be invited to spend a morning or afternoon in the Art Department. Applicants should bring their sketchbook of observational drawings, ideally using a range of media, monochrome and colour. Other work may comprise:

  • Painting (using a range of materials and techniques) on different supports
  • Printmaking
  • Collage
  • Graphic design projects
  • Photography
  • Ceramics (bulky objects may be photographed)
  • Sculpture

Students should be prepared to take part in a drawing exercise which will be prepared and introduced by a member of staff. Students will also be expected to discuss their work during a short interview. Students awarded a scholarship should expect to study GCSE or A level Fine Art or Ceramics, as appropriate.
