Representatives from Bridges Community Centre are currently visiting the three Monmouth schools to take part in the Welsh Assembly’s Climate Change Challenge.
On Thursday 24th March 2011, Year 7 was visited by Mr Cullen-Jones and Miss Vincent to raise awareness of climate change. Mr Cullen-Jones, Chairman of Transition Monmouth joined with Bridges to try to persuade people to lead a more sustainable life. With them they brought two bikes, wired up to an electricity monitor. After deciding on many innovative team names, mainly fruit based, the girls raced to see who could make it to the top, to power the washing machine.
The main object was to show year 7 students just how much energy is needed to power everyday objects, ranging from hairdryers to light bulbs. In the second activity the year 7’s were giving a turbine, attached to a light, a buzzer and fan. In order to make these work, they had to attach the correct amount of panels so that it could turn, thus generating electricity.
The visitors also promoted Earth Hour, a national event on March 26th, where everyone is encouraged to turn out their lights for 1 hour.
