Bloated Giants, Frozen Dwarfs and Everything Else

Dr Paul Roche, astronomer from the University of Glamorgan, came to HMSG on Thursday 6th October to speak to pupils in Year 9, to support and extend their current work in Physics.  We were joined by 70 pupils from Monmouth Comprehensive School, who all enjoyed the lively talk and excellent images projected onto the screen.  The hour flew by and the talk was followed by numerous questions from the audience.

In the words of Ellie, Emilie and Bryony, “We found the lecture on The Solar System very interesting and enjoyed the pictures that showed what all the planets look like.  It was also helpful to hear about the masses of the planets and how far away from the Sun each one is.  We learnt that life exists on Earth because it is in the ‘Goldilocks Zone’, i.e. it is not too hot and not too cold, because of its distance from the Sun. We would like to thank Dr Roche for coming to tell us about the Solar System and for making the information such fun”.
