Religious Education A level is a challenging and interesting course to pursue in the sixth form and combines well with either arts or science A level subjects. There is no specific requirement for prior learning, although many candidates will have already gained a basic knowledge through their Religious Education at GCSE level. The course may be followed by any candidate irrespective of gender, ethnic, religious or cultural background. It provides opportunities for candidates to extend life-long learning.
The course will be shared between the two schools and candidates will study 2 modules: Philosophy of Religion and Ethics.
An Introduction to Philosophy
This provides the opportunity to study fundamental philosophical themes such as ‘Why is there evil and suffering in the world?’, ‘How people try to prove God’s existence and arguments against such an idea’; ‘Do the advances in science such as cloning, render God unnecessary?’
An Introduction to Ethics
This provides the opportunity to study ethical beliefs and questions such as ‘Should we follow strict moral codes?’ or ‘Should we allow our instinct for pleasure to guide our thinking?’ There is a special study on sexual relationships, i.e. what are the traditional and modern view-points on:
Sexual relationships before marriage and within marriage Homosexuality Adultery and divorce Ethical views such as Natural Law, Situation Ethics and Utilitarianism
