A group of pupils from Year 13 visited the vascular lab at Gloucester Royal Hospital, on 17 March, as part of their option topic ‘Medical Physics’. The photograph shows David scanning Harriet’s carotid artery using a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine.

The red colour on the scan demonstrates blood flow away from the probe using the ‘Doppler Effect’, which is equivalent to ‘Red Shift’ of distant galaxies.
