Pupils from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls have raised over £2,500 for the Velindre Cancer Centre. In February 2010, over 220 girls and 5 boys from Monmouth School took to the stage in ‘Just Dance’, from the youngest girls in Inglefield House to the leads in their final year of school. Audiences were treated to spectacular dances and costumes in a story of two girls and their love of dance, with proceeds from ticket sales and refreshments alone reaching £2,500. The inspiration and driving force behind ‘Just Dance’ was Head Physical Education and Dance Ms Rhyan Parry, who set up a fund in memory of her sister who was treated at Velindre. The money raised from ‘Just Dance’ will go towards the Garden Project. This project has been set up to make the hospital garden suitable for patients and their families to sit out and enjoy fresh air in pleasant surroundings. Kylie McKee, Deputy Head of Fundraising for Velindre said, “We are absolutely thrilled with this fantastic amount and would like to thank Rhyan Parry and her pupils for their hard work and dedication in organising the dance shows. We would also like to thank everybody who attended the shows for their support. This money will go to our Garden Project which will provide a garden at Velindre suitable for patients and their families to sit in and enjoy fresh air. It will take them away from the ward environment, give them privacy away from others, and helps lend some normality to their lives during a difficult time.” Velindre Cancer Centre is the largest non-surgical cancer Hospital in Wales providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised anti-cancer treatments for over half the people of Wales. The centre has been providing support and care to cancer patients in South Wales for over 50 years. Every possible effort is made to ensure that each visit to Velindre is as comfortable as possible, and its experienced staff aim to provide high quality care to patients and their families. Each year Velindre Cancer Centre provides care, treatment and support for over 110,000 out patients and day cases. |
