More medals at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta

Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham

On Sunday, 25th April, HMSG rowers turned out to represent their region, ‘WAGS and Wales’ at the Junior Inter-regional Regatta in Nottingham.  Some of the best Under 16 rowers in the country were racing for honours for their region.  HMSGRC were selected to represent in the J15 coxed four, the J16 coxed four and with the addition of 2 girls from Llandaff, the J16 eight.

HEATS - The day started the with J15 four who were drawn in a tough heat and headed down the course managing a slim lead for the first 1000m and dropping back to 3rd to qualify as 3rd fastest for the 6 boat final later in the day.  They were quickly followed by the J16 four who led from the front all the way down the course and finished their heat in 1st place.  Next were the J16 eight which included those who had just raced in the four and 4 others.  This was a tough round and the eight fought it's way down a windy course to finish in 3rd place.  All the girls were through to the finals.

FINALS - With the fastest six boats now all in one race the J15 four they knew it was going to be a battle for a medal.  As they came into the last 250m the battle was on for silver and we started to gain ground on the crew in front.  With 10 strokes left it was all level but just in the last few strokes the other crew managed to inch out a lead and HMSG came home with a hard fought Bronze medal.  This was hailed as one of the most exciting races of the day.

An hour later the J16 four were on the water for their final.  After an slow start they were also lying in 3rd place at the 1000m mark but overlapping the 2nd placed crew with 1st place another length up.  This was going to be another battle for silver.  As with the J15s they started to move up in the last 250m and then with 200m to go really showed their fitness by powering through into silver medal position and finished a quarter of a length up.  Another hard-fought medal that was thoroughly deserved.

Less than an hour later the same crew went afloat with their new crewmates for the eights race.  In a tough race with very strong crews the girls all worked hard.  They battled along side the other crews eventually finishing 4th, just outside the medals.  A good result for a crew that doesn't train together regularly.

A long and rewarding day had by all.
