All pupils participate in swimming as part of their physical education during Years 7 – 9. It then becomes optional for Years 10 – 13. Pupils undertake a variety of activities which include stroke technique, starts, turns, personal survival, lifesaving, synchronized swimming and fitness swimming.

In addition it is run as an extra-curricular activity on a weekly basis, with teams taking part in galas all year round, swimmers of all abilities are welcome to training. Furthermore Monnow swimming club uses the 25m pool at HMSG for training which gives girls access to extra training sessions and an opportunity to access club swimming.
