Strange as it sounds the main purpose for visiting the Cadbury factory at Bournville is not to eat as much chocolate as you can, although many try! This fieldtrip is designed to investigate how the global company - Cadbury Schweppes Plc operates in the UK and worldwide. Pupils explore the growth of the Bournville site, the ‘Garden Village’ that that grew up around the factory, sources of raw materials and how chocolate products are manufactured, advertised and sold to a global market.
In the follow up project pupils explore a range of issues, for example how Cadburys has introduced a number of ethical and environmental policies linked to the reduction of pollution and waste from their factories, and the social programmes developed in Ghana, the main source of Cadburys cocoa. Pupils also learn about Cadburys new ‘Be Treatwise’ Campaign as a response to government health concerns. Future markets and products necessary to maintain Cadburys market share are also explored.
The quality of pupil projects continues to be outstanding and the trip has proved yet again to be extremely popular (not sure why) and a great success as can be seen in the comments below.
Mr N Meek
“The Cadbury trip was very enjoyable. I learnt a great deal about chocolate and how different types of chocolate products are made, e.g. enrobing. I also enjoyed making our own chocolate with toffee at the centre. Cadburys also helps less developed countries like Ghana by building wells.” Tara
“The Cadbury trip was absolutely fantastic. I learnt how different kinds of chocolate are made, I also found out how the Cadbury brothers worked hard to develop their company and the Garden Village.” Elaine
“I thought the Cadbury trip was really fun and interesting. I really enjoyed the talk given by Colin and the factory tour. I also enjoyed the museum as the history of the Cadbury family is really interesting.” Abigail
“The complementary chocolate was awesome!” Alicia
