History - Competitions

We encourage students to participate in a number of extra curricular competitions to enhance their personal interests in History. Below is a list of the main competitions we have been involved in during 2008/9 and plan to enter in the next academic year.

Year 7-9 Personal Project

This is a voluntary project open to any girl in Year 7-9 and has been launched for the first time in September 2009. The project will have advisory involvement only from staff and pupils can chose any subject they like, presenting their project in any format they wish! The only criteria is that there must be a central question that is looked at. Entries will be due in before Easter 2010 and judged over the holiday. Book tokens will be awarded as a prize within the department.

The Historical Fiction Competition

We had many great and exciting entries again this year, for the Historical Association’s competition. The History department selected the following three girls to represent HMSG in the competition, who were also each awarded a prize:

·         Eloise Drake (Year 8) for her historical fiction entitled, The Life of Cassie

·         Roshani Badgami (Year 8) for her historical fiction, In the Clutches of Death

·         Henrietta Blohm (Year 7) for her historical fiction, The Great Voyage

We were thrilled to hear that Henrietta’s story, set on board the Titanic, was placed in the category of ‘Short listed/ highly commended’ in the Year 7 group. Well done, Henrietta!

As a taster, here’s the opening of Henrietta’s entry …

I looked up in awe at the big huge ship towering above us. If it had eyes, I thought, it would probably crush us all like ants under its giant feet. Well, if it had feet. Mum had just stepped out of the carriage, her hat as prominent as ever. Today it was a dark blue with a huge brim, and the biggest feather you could imagine sitting on top. I didn’t know what bird it had come from. Probably some wonderful exotic one, from deep in the jungle, knowing Mum. Dad got out next, and placed one arm around Mum’s waist. He was a jolly looking fellow, with periwinkle blue eyes, and a very bald head …

The Nora Curtis History Scholarship

This year's competition has now been launched. Entrants from Year 12 must submit their essays before Christmas for a chance of winning the cash prize  (Right: 2008/9 winners)

The Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative

We will enter this long established competition in 2009/10 in conjunction with the Nelson Museum, Monmouth. 2010 marks the centenary of the premature death of our subject, local pioneer of motorcars and aeroplanes, Charles Rolls. It is hoped that a small number of students from Years 9 and 10 will be involved in the production of the project which we aim to complete by January 2010 for judging in May. The final product will certainly be displayed in school and the museum also hope to utilise our work as part of their larger exhibition which is being funded by Rolls Royce PLC.
