English Curriculum Overview – KS3

The course covers a wide range of topics and skills including projects on The RSPCA, Shakespeare, Literary Monsters, The Roots of English, Ghost Stories and television broadcasting as well as units on poetry and prose writing, presentation skills, drama, learning styles, reading skills and author research – in fact, too many to mention here!   Class sizes are usually between 15 and 20 pupils. You will work independently and in pairs and groups. On some occasions you will work with other pupils from other classes.  Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and you will have access to laptops and a designated English computer lab.   Reading is a crucial and fun part of your English study here.  You will have a new class reader every term and be encouraged to keep a reading log of your own.  There will be regular book discussions and visits to the Library.  We run a Book Club for Year 7 and will be introducing a Reading Group for Years 8 & 9.  We celebrate National Book Week and we invite well known authors to visit the school and talk to you.   Self Evaluation is an important part of KS3 English.  You will be encouraged to learn proof reading skills and to evaluate your work and progress.  Each year has a ‘Listening to Learners’ group who discuss the English course and feedback to the English teachers – and they are honest!
