English Curriculum Overview – A Level

In order to fully appreciate the English AS level you need to have an interest in literature. The course involves a lot of reading, not only of set texts but also of other linked material. You will be expected to complete regular essay assignments on the chosen set texts. A love of reading is a necessary requirement of this course!   Class sizes are smaller and more intimate in the sixth form and this is an advantage in English AS. You will find yourself discussing a wide variety of texts, issues and themes. Sharing your opinions and responding to those of others is an integral part of the course.   An understanding of the cultural, historical and social contexts in which a text is written is important at AS level. Researching and presenting contextual information is a vital aspect of your studies.   Broadening your knowledge of a text, its author and its context allows you to fully engage with the subject. The department organises theatre trips, lectures and visiting speakers to support your learning.   The AS examination consists of one paper and two 1500 word coursework entries one of which contains a creative writing element. You will be studying a mixture of pre and post 20th century texts. The full specification can be found : here
