Art Curriculum Overview - KS3

Year 7

In year 7 pupils are introduced to a wide range of media and techniques.  Girls are encouraged to work creatively and imaginatively, underpinned by observational research and the acquisition of objective drawing skills.

In 2009-2010 students will create large interior paintings after Henri Matisse, a range of tribal monsters (executed as lino prints) after the artists of Papua New Guinea and tribal ceramic plaques.

Year 8

In year 8 pupils divide their time between the fine art and ceramics.  The subject matter in 2009-2010 will be derived from natural forms and girls will be encouraged to work from close observation.  In fine art pupils will produce a variety of drawings in different media leading to the creation of a range of dry point etchings after Peter Randall Page.  In ceramics students will produce a plate filled with “creepy crawlies” after Bernard Palissy.

Year 9

In year 9 pupils continue to explore the two disciplines.  In fine art further emphasis is placed upon the study of art history and teachers can choose from a range of short schemes of work to suit the group.  In 2009-2010 girls may study Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Peter Prendergast, Kyffin Williams, Gwen John, John Everett Millais… In ceramics students will produce a gargoyle inspired by the Green Man.

All pupils produce preparatory work, research and homework in a sketchbook which they use throughout Key Stage 3.  Girls take tremendous pride in their books which document their progress throughout the junior years.
