Last Thursday the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Senior Symphony Orchestra performed a rousing and technically splendid concert in the HMSG hall to an appreciative audience. The repertoire ranged from Baroque masterpieces such as JS Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major (with a mesmerising solo from Chantelle) to Krommer’s lesser known Classical Clarinet Concerto in E Flat major, with Chantelle’s twin sister Siobhan performing the solo with grace. Martha’s rendition of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E Flat major was breathtaking and Sam demonstrated just what an enchanting instrument the viola can be with his solo in Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G Major.
In the second half Mr D Lawson, Director of Music at Monmouth School, took the baton and led the 60-piece Symphony Orchestra with passion and energy. The three pieces were Khachaturian’s Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia, selected dances from Tchaikovsky and Richard Rodney Bennett’s Murder on the Orient Express. It is hard to put into words just how splendid the performances were and our thanks go out to all of the performers and the staff who have worked so hard to stage such a memorable evening.
Encore!
