PE teacher, Mrs Jones, doesn’t just talk the talk. She has represented Great Britain at Triathlon, Biathle and Aquathlon, winning gold at the 2007 World Triathlon Championships and silver at the 2006 World Biathle Championships. Having taken time out following the birth of her son, she has returned to competitive athletics and has won her first three ‘comeback’ events.
During the Easter holidays she won the inaugural Monmouth Triathlon, organised by Black Sheep Sports (her own sponsors). This involved a 400m swim; a 15km bike and a 5km flat run round the Monmouth School pitches.
This was just a week after she won the Burnham-On-Sea Aquathlon which is a 750m swim and a 7km beach run. Not only did she lead the female competitors but she finished 3rd overall, including the male competitors.
Then, on Sunday 25th April, she won another triathlon at Burnham-on-Sea. It was a super sprint Triathlon, consisting of a 250m pool swim, 10km bike and 2.5km beach run. One-hundred and twenty-three people completed the race and Mrs Jones won the women’s race by 3 minutes. Incredibly, she achieved the second fastest swim and run times of all the competitors (including the men).
Her colleague, Mrs Callaghan, is Head of Rowing at HMSG and is assistant team manager of the U16 GB rowing squad, having herself rowed at the Commonwealth Games in 1986. Yesterday she ran the London Marathon in the impressive time of 4hours and 22minutes in aid of HMSG's charity to support the Llwala Girls' School in Uganda. She is closing in on her target of £1000 and is still taking sponsorship. Mrs Callaghan’s Year 9 tutor group welcomed her into school this morning with a guard of honour and a bouquet.
Well done to both Mrs Jones and Mrs Callaghan! They certainly set the standard to which HMSG girls aspire.
