On Monday 14th March, a team of six HMSG students (consisting of Dola, Laura, Saskia, Emily, Smera and Ella) travelled down to the Welsh Assembly Office in Cardiff to take part in the regional round of the European Youth Parliament. The day proved to be a challenging one, with the girls participating in many complex debates about some of the current affairs affecting the European Union at this moment. The girls rose to the challenge well, responding to some particularly taxing questions from the other teams.
The day commenced with a warm up debate on the controversial motion of "Should prisoners get the vote?" which sparked a lot of interest from all teams. After a series of strong performances in the other very topical debates, the team was selected to go through to the national finals of the competition, which will be held in September in Durham. Special mentions must go to Dola, who showed true spirit and enthusiasm by volunteering to deliver a speech on a topic she knew nothing about and, needless to say, delivered confidently and with excellence. Ella must also be congratulated for her summation speech in our own debate, which was the very relevant motion of "Should the EU continue funding scientific research projects?", which was recognised by the jury as the best of the day. Aside from the fantastic result, a great time was enjoyed by all, and special thanks must go to Mr Norgrove for his time and support throughout the day.
