Drama Curriculum Overview - KS4

The department currently follows the WJEC Drama curriculum (www.wjec.co.uk).  During Year 10, students are introduced to and work with contrasting styles and genre as well as the ideas and techniques of some influential theatre practitioners. They explore these styles through improvisation and text work. Through mini-performance projects they develop a heightened awareness of the process of converting words on a page to action on a stage. They are required to reflect on and evaluate their work through written exercises in a drama journal. Experience of live theatre also contributes to a growing awareness of theatre forms.  In Year 10 the course also includes the study of one play from the point of view of actor, director and designer. The study of this play is the focus for the Year 10 exam as well as for the written exam at the end of the course. Towards the end of Year 10, using the knowledge and skills they have acquired, students begin work in small groups on their Devised practical.

In Year 11 all of the main sections of the course are examined, beginning with the Devised practical performance carried over from Year 10 and performed in the autumn. A written evaluation of the devised practical work is an essential part of the final assessment. The second practical, performance of a scene from a published play, takes place in the spring. The final exam focuses on the play selected for detailed study as well as a written evaluation of the second practical.
