All pupils in Year 7 follow a Classical Studies course specifically designed by the classics staff at HMSG. The course explores the history and culture from the earliest European civilisation, the Minoans, to that of Classical Greece in the 5th century BC. There is an annual competition based on Odysseus’ wanderings after the Trojan War.
As part of the course, pupils are given the opportunity to explore the neo-classical architecture of Monmouth.
In Year 8 all pupils begin their formal study of Latin and the majority continue into Year 9. The Cambridge Latin Course, set in ancient Pompeii and supported by a wealth of additional material, is used. A taster course in Classical Greek is offered to the top sets.
