Year 9 Geography Field Trip to Cadbury World

On Tuesday 28th September Year 9 set off, taste buds at the ready, to visit Cadbury World at their famous Bournville site in Birmingham.  Before the girls could exceed their recommended calorific intake for the day (week/month?) they were taken on a guided walk around part of Bournville Village, where worker welfare was so important and community facilities were provided by the philanthropic Cadbury family.

Once inside the factory the girls extended their understanding of chocolate making, Cadbury’s historic links with Ghana, the ‘Be Treatwise’ campaign and the steps that Cadburys/Kraft is taking to reduce their carbon footprint.  As well as a walking tour the girls were lucky enough to have an hour with Cadburys Education Manager, Colin Pitt, to answer questions and learn more about trans-national corporations. The girls will now complete a research and presentation project with the winning entries returning to Bournville to be displayed in the study centre.

The finale was a visit to the “Essence” Centre where the girls were able to experiment with their own chocolate concoctions, adding a range of fillings, from marshmallow to rice crispies, before covering them with delicious liquid Dairy Milk!

Returning to Monmouth on a high Year 9 would like to extend their thanks to Mrs Callaghan, Miss Poole and Kirsten for joining us and volunteering for chocolate quality control duties.
