Members of top street dance troupe, Diversity, led schoolgirls from Monmouth in a “dream come true” workshop at their headquarters.

Thirteen pupils from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls threw themselves into learning all the moves Diversity could teach them during the visit to Danceworks Studio in Rainham last Tuesday.

The girls won the opportunity to take part in the workshop after taking first prize in a dance-off held by British Gas and judged by Diversity in July 2015.

Two members, Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely, held separate workshops on Tuesday to teach the girls their unique styles. They included some sequences from their latest tour and, to great amusement, the technique of the Nae Nae.

Rhyan Parry, Head of Dance at HMSG, accompanied the pupils, who ranged from Year 7 to Year 13, along with dance teacher Zoe Pritchard and old girl Becky Blood, who volunteers much of her time to help with dance at the School.

Ms Parry said: “The girls absolutely loved it.

“They were totally star-struck and it really was a dream come true for them.

“I’ve had an incredible response from the parents, who said their daughters were over the moon to have been given this once in a lifetime opportunity.

“The Diversity boys were so lovely and generous with their time. They gave us a tour of their humble headquarters, let the girls take as many photos as they liked – and even signed their shoes for them!”

“Danceworks used to be a cleaning warehouse,” Ms Parry added.

“Dancers only ever come from a harsh, gruelling background – they are never, ever sitting on their laurels.

“Diversity are at their peak at the moment and Ashley Banjo can be working until 3am every night.

“His drive and determination is amazing.”
