Sport

Teamwork, leadership, and a sense of responsibility are all qualities we prize highly at the School and sport is an ideal platform for encouraging and building these virtues. Sport is highly valued and complements academic studies allowing pupils to flourish in all areas.

We offer all pupils the opportunity to maximise their sporting potential, through both PE lessons and an extensive Extra-Curricular programme. Our aspiration is that every pupil will take with them the physical ability and confidence to participate in sport beyond education and thus ultimately develop a healthy lifelong interest in physical activity.

Our talented performers are encouraged to trial at county, regional and national levels. Pupils past and present have achieved international recognition across a variety of sports and we currently have 10 international sports women studying at HMSG.

The sporting facilities upon which we draw are superb; a full sized all-weather flood lit pitch caters for hockey and lacrosse in the winter and tennis during the summer term. The outdoor hard courts are home to netball during the Lent term and tennis during the summer; and our large sports hall can host a number of sports but is mostly used for badminton, netball and indoor hockey. Our exceptional location at the heart of the Wye Valley is especially inspiring for those who enjoy field sports and outdoor pursuits. The backdrop to the lacrosse and rounders pitches is breath taking.

The quality of coaching is of the highest order with the majority of coaches themselves performers and coaches at national and international level. Every girl will be able to get the most out of her love of whatever sport attracts her, whether she is simply a keen amateur or an elite talent.

Our fixtures are competitive and are mostly played on Wednesday afternoon and all day Saturday. The variety and standard of our sport means that we not only compete against local independent schools but travel far and wide to compete in national tournaments. International sports tours for senior pupils are organised on alternate years. More regular junior weekend tours are run for Years 7, 8 and 9.

The HMSG Sport and Dance Scholarship scheme will provide scholars with the opportunity to succeed with both their physical and academic ambitions. We currently support fifteen scholars from a variety of major sports and dance. Scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+.
